The first thing I should say about myself is that I go by Joe. Joseph is my you’re-in-trouble name, but joeaguirre.com was taken, so here we are. I grew up in a southern California beach town with dreams of becoming a professional surfer. In college I discovered photography and a larger world opened up. After graduation I worked as a camera assistant in Los Angeles and began making documentary films on the side. One of those films was picked up by PBS for national broadcast and went on to win the Big Sky Film Festival. I worked for years under Director/DP Samuel Bayer, from whom I learned an irreverence for the ‘right’ way of doing things and a striving to make honest images. My work is grounded in curiosity, collaboration and a gratitude for this tremendous opportunity to live a visual life. I am based in Los Angeles.
